As part of the 3 valleys of Reunion, Cilaos is the driest and sunniest, and it hosts in its center the city of the same name, famous spa resort because of its wine, but also its embroidery, its sparkling water and its lenses. The circus is dominated by the Piton des Neiges, at over 3000 meters above sea level, and it was once a refuge for runaway slaves and whites of modest means. It is reached by a single road, from St. Louis, "the road turns to the 400," which follows zigzagging steep walls. More populous than the circus Matafe or Salazie, it has 6200 inhabitants and is bordered by natural walls and cornices, and the town of Cilaos, typical Creole despite the altitude, will charm you with its fresh and clean air: you will discover a beautiful church with a blue and bright white, a spa in operation since the 19th century (which is the only one on the island), 80 km of trails in the area, and small villages scattered. You will find in Cilaos many shops, restaurants and accommodations that make it an ideal starting point for hikes and excursions in the circus, more or less difficult: ascent of Piton des Neiges (8am to / with 1700 vertical meters ) mounted Taïbit neck (4:30 to / 800 vertical meters), and much easier, walk on the path of Sources (loop 1:30). For relaxation after stress, the spa offers hydrotherapy treatments, seaweed wraps or sessions of sauna or hammam: a genuine stay in paradise!
