What to do in Chamonix Mont-Blanc : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants

Chamonix Mont-BlancTown in France, Haute-Savoie, Chamonix is one of the highest towns in the country and is built at the foot of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps. A population of just under 9,000 inhabitants, the city is the meeting point for many climbers and mountain lovers, making it a major tourist destination, winter and summer. It is reached by the road which prolongs the A40, or from Italy via the Mont Blanc tunnel, along more than 11 km, but also by train and by plane landing at Geneva (remote 88 km). In the city, we find one of the highest cable cars in the world, that of the Aiguille du Midi. Several festive events animate the life of Chamonix throughout the year, such as the Guides Festival in August, the Tourism Summits in December, climbing festival in July. Tourists come mainly in Chamonix for its environment and outdoor activities in the mountains: hiking, mountaineering, paragliding, but it is also an 18 hole golf course, tennis courts and swimming pool, as well as an ice rink. Besides the already mentioned Aiguille du Midi, the traveler will discover the Mer de Glace glacier 7 km long, which is accessed via the Montenvers railway; Montenvers himself with his ice cave and sculptures; White Lake at 2352 meters which can be reached on foot after two hours of walking in the Aiguilles Rouges; and for skiers or hikers, the Vallée Blanche, superb ride (two routes, one for skiing and one for walking) in the glacial valley below the Aiguille du Midi. Heritage side, you can admire the Saint-Michel church in the center, dating from 1709 and a former rectory in Maison de la Montagne; the statue of Horace Benedict de Saussure and Jacques Balmat; the beautiful fresco in 2010 adorning a building downtown that honors climbers and guides on two centuries of Chamonix. Also visit the Alpine Museum and the Crystal Museum.
