What to do in Caen : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants

CaenIn the Calvados northwest of France, Caen has a rich architectural heritage and has about 107,000 inhabitants. It can be reached in two hours by the A13 from Paris, and a ferry connects to England via Portsmouth. The city is also accessible by train and has an airport that allows flights to Lyon, Corsica, England Prague. Its proximity to the D-Day beaches or seaside resorts such as Deauville and Cabourg, and its own cultural richness make it an attractive city for the traveler. In the city you can travel by bus or tram, as well as bike with a bike sharing system (40 stations and 385 bikes). You will discover in the city numerous green spaces, some of which are classified: the case of Michel d'Ornano Park or the Botanical Gardens. Several monuments and historic sites are sure to interest the traveler: for example the memorial in memory of the Battle of Normandy with its gallery of the Nobel Peace Prize; Hotel Escoville, Renaissance, home to the Tourist Office; the Church of St. Peter built in the 12th century, remarkable for its ornamentation; the Abbaye aux Hommes, undertaken in 1066 by William the Conqueror, and combining Romanesque and Gothic style; Ladies Abbey built by Queen Matilda, which is a counterpart to the previous building, with its magnificent crypt with 16 columns supporting the vaulted ceilings; Castle, hosting the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Normandy. We must add that Caen proves otherwise a lively and dynamic city, with many shops and businesses, located only two hours from Paris ... and ten minutes from the beaches! An excellent choice for a weekend that will combine relaxation and culture.
