Capital of Guinea-Bissau, Bissau is located on the estuary of the Geba River, facing the Atlantic Ocean, and has about 500 000 inhabitants. Still marked by the civil war in the very end of the 20th century, the city houses several monuments that are worth a look from those who have not been destroyed at that time. There are also beautiful beaches and a bustling market and colorful. Some places to see: the Cathedral, the barracks of the 18th century where the mausoleum of Amilcar Cabral, the ruins of the former Presidential Palace, the palace of justice. Do not miss the Museum of African Art, which displays many traditional crafts: pottery, baskets, carvings and fabrics. There are not many sights to see in the city, but you will no doubt enjoy its provincial atmosphere, quiet and quirky, and the warm welcome and simple of its inhabitants.
