The capital of Germany, Berlin has a population of three and a half million, nearly five million including the whole agglomeration. Berlin is one of the ten most populated European cities. It was built in the 13th Century and nowadays is a symbol of the reunification of Germany. However it is also a major European cultural and artistic centre with hundreds of museums, theatres and libraries. The city has rivers and canals, lakes and gardens scattered throughout which adds a refreshing aspect and gives it a green and pleasant atmosphere, reinforced by the outstanding architecture visible in its buildings. Visit the historical centre with its numerous outstanding monuments, places and buildings including the Berliner Dom, Pergame Museum, the lovely and famous avenue Unter den Linden with its historical buildings, the three Opera houses, Brandenburg Gate, the Pariser Platz, and Neptune’s Fountain. In the west of the centre there is the largest zoo in Europe, the Zoological Gardens and the Charlottenbourg Castle. However the more modern Berlin also has some undeniable attractions that should not be missed and architects have released their creative genius here; see the superb cupola of the Sony Centre, the Daimler Complex with its arcades, and the Hansaviertel quarter at Moabit with 35 buildings specially built for an architectural competition. Above all Berlin has a cosmopolitan character, open, multi-cultural and tolerant with numerous young people providing a continual energy. It is well served for public transport and you can get around the city easily both day and night.
