Banjul is the capital of the Gambia on the island Sainte-Marie at the mouth of the river, while it stretches horizontally length and counts nearly 35 000 inhabitants. Its sandy beaches attract tourists, particularly those from northern Europe, and tourism proves also the main economic resource of the country, with the operation of peanuts. Apart from the beaches, there is not much to visit in Banjul, however, include the Ark of Independence at the entrance of the city, under which only the President has the right to pass; Albert market, central location where smells and colors add to the cacophony, with the stalls of fabrics and footwear, fruit and vegetables, and where everything is market; the old town to the west of the pier with its old colonial buildings and decrepit houses shingles; the National Museum, with its collection of various objects, musical instruments and agricultural tools, and a very interesting archaeological section; the mosque.
