Laos Now Requires Digital “Arrival Card” for All Visitors – Here’s What You Need to Know

Like many countries worldwide – and increasingly so – Laos is also going digital when it comes to entry formalities for its territory.

Effective Since September 1st

The measure has been in effect since this month. To visit Laos, all travelers must now have an “Arrival Register,” or electronic arrival card, obtained within two days prior to entering the country.

This free document, which then appears as a QR Code received by the applicant, is obtained online directly on the official site immigration.gov.la. It supplements any visa that may also be required depending on your nationality. However, note that unlike other similar documents, the Arrival Register is only valid for the arrival date declared when obtaining it. This means that if you make a mistake, you’ll need to redo the process, just as you would if you want to make round trips between Laos and another country.

One last thing to know: for now, this digital card is only required at the country’s international airports plus, for those arriving overland, at the Friendship Bridge that connects Thailand (Nong Khai) to the Lao capital Vientiane.

Entry Requirements for Laos

For tourist travel, Americans and other travelers need a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the planned departure date from the country and a visa. The visa is then valid for 30 days in the country.

The Lao visa can be obtained in advance for the equivalent of $38, from Lao representations abroad, online on the official government site (laoevisa.gov.la), or at several entry points into the territory. To this is now also added this “Arrival Register” implemented since September 1st.
