The temporary US security alert for Nogales, in Mexico’s Sonora state, ended on 11 September 2026. Reports about the restrictions announced six days earlier therefore no longer describe that alert’s status. The US government resumed regular activities, but its notice also reminded travellers that Sonora remained a Level 3 destination: reconsider travel.
For an October visit, that distinction matters. The end of a temporary alert does not amount to an all-clear for a border trip.
The standing advice still affects a Nogales itinerary
As of 15 October, the US State Department continues to advise reconsidering travel to Sonora because of terrorism and crime. Its Nogales rules prohibit US government employees from using taxis, public buses or ride-hailing apps. The department strongly advises US citizens to follow the restrictions imposed on its staff.
The permitted areas for employees follow specified corridors. These include Highway 15 between the DeConcicini crossing and the Highway 15/15D junction, and Boulevard Luis Donaldo Colosio between the Mariposa crossing and Highway 15. They do not cover the whole municipality.
For staff travelling between Nogales and Hermosillo, the permitted journey is in daylight on Federal Highway 15. The advisory also records shootings on that route during the day. A daytime departure is no guarantee against violence.
These details make a difference if your plan depends on a taxi after crossing the border, or a drive beyond Nogales. Read the State Department’s Sonora section against the actual route and transport you intend to use; its general Mexico advice does not describe every local restriction.
Which country’s advice should you use?
The employee rules above are US government policy, accompanied by advice to US citizens. They should not be presented as Mexican entry requirements for every visitor.
British travellers also have the FCDO’s regional guidance. It names Sonora among the northern states affected by drug-related violence and warns that armed clashes can break out without warning. This is a separate advisory, rather than a British version of the US rating.
Before committing to a Nogales visit, use your own government’s current regional advice to decide whether to go. The September notice answers one narrow question — whether that temporary US alert remains in force. It does not settle whether your proposed journey is advisable.
