What to do in Lesotho

Consisting of mountains, Lesotho offers a territory whose lowest point is more than a thousand meters, and its landscapes are totally carved by this rugged relief: cascades, transparent lakes, green slopes. There are many wonders to discover in this small country: the crafts of the Teyateyaneng region, the peaks of more than 3000 meters in the northeastern and central highlands, or the lush valleys in the same region .

Some sites not to be missed: Maseru, the capital, and its town center with colonial architecture, with its sandstone constructions of the region, and its various monuments like the cathedral Notre Dame des Victoires, History, the Papal Pavilion, the beautiful gardens of the Morija Museum; The village of Thaba Bosiu and its historical site, with the natural fortress of King Mosheshoe; The winding road leading to the Sani Top, which is a starting point for many hikes and opening onto a grandiose point of view; Nature reserves such as the magnificent Ts'ehlanyane National Park or the Bokong Nature Reserve, or the Sehlabathebe National Park, with many hiking trails and waterfalls; The dinosaur prints near Quthing and Leribe; The rock paintings of Ha Baroana.

To do absolutely to taste these superb landscapes: a hike or equestrian in the highlands of the North and the Center; Horseback riding in the regions of Semonkong or Malealea; Attend the many festivities that mark the life of the population.

Lesotho: The basics

French nationals just need a valid passport for at least 6 months to enter the country.

The current currency is Loti (LSL).

There is no direct flight between France and Lesotho, so you can land in Johannesburg and fly to Maseru or rent a car and get there by road.

To move around the country, there are minibuses that connect the main cities, but they leave only when they are full and therefore do not have fixed schedules. The most convenient is undoubtedly to rent a car to go to the discovery of the country.

Health: there is no compulsory vaccine to go to Lesotho, but it is advisable to have up to date its standard vaccinations and to add those against hepatitis A and B and against typhoid. Also, be sure to drink only bottled water and eat well-cooked foods, as well as to wash your hands very regularly.

Safety: A few basic rules apply to ensure your safety: do not move at night, avoid local buses and taxis, do not mingle with crowd movements, do not move at night in rural areas. Attention also to the meteorological variations which are brutal in mountainous region, and especially to the very violent storms during the austral summer, which make victims every year.
