Greenland: Climate & Weather

The climate is arctic, but the island is large enough to vary according to the area. The coastal region experiences the absence of ice during the very short period of summer, while the interior is permanently covered with ice. Inland and north, temperatures drop to -35 ° C, rising to 5 ° C in summer (June, July, August).

In the south and along the fjords, the temperature in summer can sometimes reach 20 ° C. It is therefore better to visit Greenland between June and August.

What to do in Greenland

Greenland is a very large island, an autonomous province dependent on Denmark, located in the Atlantic Ocean in northeastern Canada. It is bordered to the north by the glacial arctic ocean. Only 15% of its territory is inhabitable, and the country has only 58 000 inhabitants.

A destination apart, this country will undoubtedly surprise you: icebergs and pack ice, aurora borealis over the fjords, you will discover another world.

Discover, for example, the very pretty town of Qaqortoq, and from there take the boat to visit the Viking ruins of Hvasley.

On the island of Uunartoq, bathe in the hot springs, close to the icebergs: an unforgettable sensation.

Sail between blocks of ice from Disko, a typical West Coast village.

To admire the magic of the aurora borealis, autumn is the ideal season. In June, you will have the right to the midnight sun. And still, offshore, you will see colonies of walruses, seals, narwhals, whales and penguins. And on earth, muskoxen, reindeer, and maybe even polar bears ...

If you hike on the south coast, you will discover in summer the vegetation in full bloom: another amazing vision of the country!

Sports enthusiasts will be able to enjoy fishing, kayaking, mountain climbing and mountain biking.

Greenland: The basics

An identity card or a passport is sufficient for European citizens to enter Greenland.

The current currency is the same as in Denmark, the Danish krone (DKK).

You will reach Greenland by air, at the airport of Kangerlussuaq, by flights from Iceland or Denmark.

To move inside the country, it will be the ferry or the plane. But you can also try the kayak or dog sledding!

For your health, there is no particular problem, the most important thing is to protect yourself from the cold by providing several layers, insulating shoes, and to keep warm your extremities (gloves, warm socks, hat). In summer, protection against mosquitoes is essential in some places.
