The climate is temperate with a marine influence therefore a constant marine breeze. There is a great range in temperatures: The winters are cold and even somewhat rigorous in the mountains, summers are hot and the other seasons are quite marked too.

Fairly heavy rain falls in the hills and mountains and the area of Lenkoran although the rest of the country is fairly dry. The ideal time to visit is between June and September.

What to do in Azerbaijan


Although not yet really opened to tourism, Azerbaijan is definitely a country to discover.

Bakou, the Capital, has nearly 2 million inhabitants and has some lovely monuments worth a visit: The Fine Arts Museum, the Opera House, the Shirvanshah Palace dating from the 15th Century, the Synyk-Kala built in the 11th Century and also the old town with its outstanding fortress.

The Caucasus Mountains and the various villages in this area are also worth a visit.
 

Azerbaijan : The basics


A visa is required and it is recommended that you obtain one before going there to avoid any possible complications.

The currency in circulation is the Azerbaijani Manat.

It is recommended that you avoid the Armenian borders for your own security.

Health precautions to take concern keeping away from fowls in order to avoid bird flu, avoid drinking tap water as this is not safe in parts of the country and take necessary precautions against malaria.

Travel within the country can be undertaken using the trains, which are somewhat old and a little decrepit but frequent.

Capital of Azerbaijan, Baku is built on the shores of the Caspian Sea. With just over two million inhabitants, has existed for thousand years BC and has remains dating from the 5th century.

At the center you will find the walled city, with winding lanes, reflecting its cultural diversity through the different tracks that will remain. Two masterpieces are worth noting: the Palace Shirvanshahs, built in the 15th century and the Maiden Tower, from the 6th century BC and restored in the 12th century.

To the south, the city has a new modern architecture and a very geometric arrangement, which does not interfere with its elegance. Guests can visit numerous museums, but the mosques that are open to non-Muslims as well as several other places of pilgrimage. We can point out some interesting places, like the Place des Fontaines, the belfry neo-classical city hall, the art nouveau Palace of Petroleum, the Museum of Carpets and Applied Arts, the Alley of Martyrs, and the Institute of Manuscripts, and the Palace Ismaillya.

Its mild climate and proximity to beaches make it a popular holiday destination for Russians.
