What to do in Venice : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
A city in north-eastern Italy, Venice has over 270,000 inhabitants, around 60,000 in the historic centre. Listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site, it is famous worldwide for its canals, but also for its carnival and many historical sites such as St. Mark's Square and the Doge's Palace. Boasting an exceptionally rich history, it also occupies a special location, in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea, with more than a hundred islands that dictated its structure with 177 channels and hundreds of bridges, its pedestrian centre and boats, water taxis and traditional gondolas that provide the only means of transport. The city has generally a Mediterranean climate but with fairly cold winters and humid summers. It is served by an international airport. You can admire many other famous places already mentioned as well as many churches, such as St. Mark's Basilica and the church of Santa Maria Assunta, and several museums including the Palazzo Grassi and the Gallerie dell'Accademia, sumptuous palaces such as the Mint, the Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo and Dario palace on the Grand Canal, many bridges, squares and gardens of course, and also the Clock Tower, the La Fenice theatre, the Goldoni's House and the Slaves Wharf. A number of events also animate the city such as the Venice Biennale, Venice Film Festival, Carnival, the Epiphany Regatta, and the Venice Marathon which are among the best known.
