What to do in Périgueux : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants

PérigueuxFrench city of Périgord, in the south-west of the country, Périgueux counts approximately 30 000 inhabitants, and it offers the traveler a rich historical inheritance. Here are some of the 44 listed historical monuments or sites of interest: the Neo-Byzantine Saint-Front Cathedral, with its five cupolas, its beautiful stained glass windows and its Greek cross form, built in the 12th century; the church of Saint-Etienne-de-la-Cité, 11th century Romanesque building, built on the site of an ancient temple dedicated to the god Mars; the Tour de Vésone, former Gallo-Roman temple; the Barrière castle, built between the 12th and 15th centuries, of which only ruins remain, and some walls still pierced by windows; the Gallo-Roman Museum, installed on an archaeological site and designed by Jean Nouvel, with its transparent wall, its collection of objects from Gaulish peoples who lived there, and its models restoring the urban environment of the time; the Museum of Art and Archeology of Périgord, created in 1835, and gathering 4500 pieces in connection with archeology and ethnography, in particular those concerning the artistic know-how; the arena garden, covering 11 hectares, the green lung of the city, its magnificent trees, yews, lime trees, spruces or chestnut trees. Take a stroll along the Limogeanne street, the main thoroughfare of the historic heart, by bike along the Greenway along the Isle, or by canoe on the Blue Way, which runs from Trélissac to Marsac. You can reach Périgueux by the A89 from Bordeaux or Lyon, by train from Paris, Bordeaux or Lyon, and even by plane landing at the airport of Périgueux-Bassillac which provides a connection with Paris. A bus network allows travel in the city, as well as an electric shuttle on market days.
