What to do in Nevers : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
French city of the department of Nièvre, located in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, Nevers has a little less than 35 000 inhabitants and is built on the Loire. It offers the traveler a beautiful historical center and a rich craftsmanship around faience. You will discover the Ducal Palace, one of the first castles of the Loire, with its superb Renaissance carved stone facade; the Gothic cathedral Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte with its two chevets; the Saint-Etienne Romanesque church, built in the 11th century; the remains of the medieval ramparts, such as the Porte du Croux and the Goguin tower; the Saint-Martin abbey dating from the 8th century; the Porte de Paris, a triumphal arch that commemorates Fontenoy's victory in 1745 and bears an epitaph of Voltaire. You will also visit the municipal museum Frédéric Blandin, devoted to a collection of earthenware, spun glass and fine arts, not to mention the market gardens of La Baratte, on the right bank of the Loire, which have existed for centuries and are dotted vegetable gardens, fountains, laundries. For some it will be inevitable to go to the chapel of St. Gildard Convent to gather before the intact body of St. Bernadette (Soubirous) who rests there since 1925, and who lived in Nevers until his death. Nevers can be reached by train from Paris but also from other major French cities, but also by the A77 always coming from Paris. A bus network makes it easy to get around the city.
