What to do in Douai : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
French city of Hauts-de-France, Douai has long lived from the exploitation of coal mines and today has a little over 40 000 inhabitants. Located 190 km from Paris, it is connected by the TGV in one hour of journey. Douai has districts built at different times, and the traveler can discover interesting monuments and sites to visit, such as the Gothic belfry of the 14th and 15th centuries; the Musée de la Chartreuse, in the former Carthusian monastery, and its fine collection of paintings from the Ecole du Nord, Italian and French; Arkéos Park Museum, a modern space dedicated to archeology; the collegiate church Saint-Pierre, impressive church with its 112 meters long, and its superb organ case of the 18th century and the church Notre-Dame, the oldest of the churches of the city, with some parts dating from the 12th century, and its beautiful stained glass made in Lorin and Gaudin workshops. Like many cities in the north, Douai is very festive and many events punctuate the year. You will have the choice between, for example, the Gayant festivities (giant in Picard) initiated in 1530 and now classified as intangible heritage by UNESCO, and the feast of the shipyard, where the bargees house the commemoration of the construction of a boat -chapelle in 1897, which allowed mariners to attend religious services. Also, take a boat trip on the River Scarpe, which flows through the city, where you will appreciate the speaker's comments on the city's 2000-year history, admiring the facades, locks and bridges. And if you have the opportunity to attend a show at the Theater, do not miss this beautiful building in the shape of a horseshoe, as well as its scenes of classified scenes.
