What to do in Angoulême : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants

AngoulêmeMunicipality of Charente, in the south-west of France, Angouleme has about 42 000 inhabitants and is built on a rocky outcrop. Known for its famous International Festival of Comics, the city offers the traveler a beautiful historical heritage and a real cultural animation. You will be able to visit several very interesting sites in the city, as for example the ramparts, built under the Roman Empire then rebuilt in the Middle Ages, and which offer a magnificent point of view; the church of St. Andrew, in the heart of the old town, Gothic style with a Romanesque fore-nave; the Gabriel Fauré conservatory, located in the former Jesuit college of 1622, of which there remains the gallery and the square bell tower; the town hall, former county residence, having preserved the two towers of the old castle, one round and the other polygonal; the halls, built in 1888, with its iron and glass architecture inspired by the halls of Paris; the Chapel of the Cordeliers; the Saint-Simon hotel, of Renaissance style, with its beautiful facade decorated with pilasters and skylights richly carved; the Romanesque cathedral and the superb sculptures of its facade. Several museums are worth visiting, including the Comic Museum and the Museum of the Archaeological and Historical Society of Charente, or the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Paper. You will also admire the Walls Paintings, a tribute to the City of Image. You can reach Angoulême by the N10 from Paris or Bayonne, or by taking the train on the Paris-Bordeaux line (which stops at Angoulême), and for those who prefer the plane, an international airport is located in Brie-Champniers . For city trips, you can rent classic or electric bikes, or use the buses.
