Some may remember those famous Google Glass from about a decade ago – the smart glasses based on augmented reality. Not exactly a runaway success at the time, but they may have paved the way for new glasses designed as powerful translation tools that could soon hit the consumer market.

First and Foremost: An Instant Language Translation Tool

It all started with Google Glass. A project born in 2011, but its consumer version was discontinued four years later, pivoting instead to models designed for specific professional sectors such as healthcare or logistics.

The concept was highly innovative for its time – perhaps even a bit too ahead of the curve. These connected glasses could display digital information like text messages, photos and videos, GPS directions, and even internet access directly in the user’s field of vision through the lenses. Revolutionary, certainly, but deemed by many as a bit too intrusive…

Now, over a decade later, the idea is resurfacing. Although modified in its approach, since what could soon be offered to the world would serve only one purpose: ensuring instant language translation between people who don’t necessarily speak the same language. Developed by a Chinese company specializing in real-time language translation, these glasses called Leion Hey2 would have just this primary function – far from everything Google originally envisioned for its model.

Powered naturally by Artificial Intelligence, the translation would be available for about a hundred languages. Every conversation would be captured and instantly transcribed as subtitles in your chosen language on the glass lenses – essentially the same way you watch a foreign film with subtitles on a screen. And to complete the package, audio transcription would even be possible for those who want it. All this with a battery life of around 8 hours.

This could appeal to travelers, but also to the hearing impaired who could benefit from this technology that works even in the noisiest environments or between speakers several meters apart.

For now, while the Leion Hey2 are still prototypes showcased at trade shows, their reception appears highly favorable – so much so that Google, Meta/Facebook, and several others have joined the race. All that remains is for this new generation of connected glasses to hit the market. Which shouldn’t be too long now, especially at prices affordable for most users.

If there’s one city on earth that consistently makes headlines for tourist innovations, it’s Dubai. This emirate metropolis increasingly shows us what tomorrow’s megacities might look like—not just through its architecture and urban planning, but through the services and facilities designed for both residents and the roughly 19-20 million tourists who visit annually. Even for something as “simple” as how we might pay for purchases…

“Dubai Cashless”

When it comes to innovation, Dubai goes all in. The city has decided to progressively eliminate cash payments from its territory for both locals and visitors. From paying for services of all kinds to simple everyday purchases, coins and bills are becoming a thing of the past.

This is where the “Dubai Cashless” project comes in. Part of a broader economic plan called D33, the initiative aims to dramatically expand digital payments for everyone while reducing cash use in all economic and tourist transactions. The ambitious goal? By 2026, 90% of all transactions in Dubai will be cashless.

Why Not?

After all, why not embrace this future? The city and its Emirate, supported by various partners and local institutions, see themselves as pioneers. Authorities have declared that “what we’re building today will hopefully become a model for other major metropolises through smart, secure, and universally accessible payment channels.”

It’s worth watching this space—especially since this cashless reality could soon arrive in cities across America and beyond…

The European Union is rolling out a major change to how it manages border crossings, and if you’re planning a European vacation, you’ll want to know about it. While EU citizens and long-term visa holders won’t be affected, anyone visiting Europe for stays under three months will encounter a new system. Called the EES (Entry/Exit System), it’s finally launching on October 12 after several delays. Here’s what you need to know.

The End of Passport Stamps

Until now, border control officers across Europe have manually stamped passports of non-EU travelers. That’s about to become a thing of the past. The EES introduces a fully automated, digital system that will register visitors each time they cross into or out of European borders. Every crossing will record your travel document type, name, biometric data including fingerprints and facial images, plus the date and location of entry and exit. Any entry refusals or special circumstances related to your visit will also be logged.

The European Union’s goals are twofold: modernize border management procedures and strengthen security within the EU. Additionally, the EES will help combat identity fraud through collected biometric data and verify that each visitor complies with authorized stay durations (typically 90 days within any 180-day period) upon exit.

Worth noting: although the system officially launches October 12, the rollout will be gradual, starting with major European entry points. Full implementation across all border crossings is scheduled for April 10, 2026—just in time for the ETIAS travel authorization program to launch later that year.

Practical Details for Travelers

In practical terms, here’s what replaces the traditional passport stamp: On your first entry, you’ll undergo a scan of your identification document, a photograph, and fingerprint collection (for visa-exempt travelers over 12 years old), plus submission of your personal details (first and last names, date of birth, nationality, passport number). This creates your digital file. The system will also record the date, time, and location of your entry into European territory and, if applicable, the reason for any entry denial.

For subsequent crossings, once your digital file exists, it will simply be verified and updated each time with the date, time, and location of your entry or exit from European territory.

Expect some initial delays as these EES files are created for millions of travelers. However, major border posts—particularly large international airports—will have self-service kiosks available for visitors to complete these procedures. Keep in mind that regardless of how you submit your information, border authorities will still validate the collected data.

Key Takeaways:

Launch date: October 12, 2025

Affects non-EU travelers on short stays (under 90 days)

Biometric data required: fingerprints and facial images

Self-service kiosks available at major airports

Full implementation by April 2026

Swimming in the ocean, lake or river, forest walks, mountain hikes, bike rides, but also long car journeys or flights – vacations are ultimately a combination of activities and situations we’re not necessarily used to. And these might require some advice, often simple and even common sense, to ensure everything goes smoothly each time.

Today, let’s focus on something relevant for those who have or will have a long flight ahead – transatlantic or even longer. Five tips to physically prepare yourself for such journeys.

Creating your own environment

1- Adjust your sleep schedule: long-haul flights mean, unless you’re flying north-south (or vice versa), dealing with jet lag upon arrival. Start by adjusting your sleep schedule a few days before departure to align with your destination’s local time. If you’re traveling east, go to bed earlier; if you’re traveling west, go to bed later. This rule should also apply during your flight – try to sleep (or stay awake) depending on your expected arrival time.

2- Wear loose, comfortable clothing: that doesn’t restrict movement or circulation. For those prone to heavy legs, especially on flights, wear compression socks to promote blood circulation. In short, plan your flight outfit even if it means changing just before and after the flight.

3- Stay hydrated and eat light, balanced meals: if there’s one piece of advice for anyone flying for several hours, it’s to hydrate abundantly (without alcohol or caffeine). Between the dry air circulated during the flight and cabin pressure lower than what we experience at ground level, our body becomes dehydrated, which can lead to increased fatigue, headaches, or even digestive problems. That’s also why you should opt for light, fiber-rich foods for meals and snacks to aid digestion. Conversely, avoid heavy, fatty, or spicy meals.

4- Move regularly: the longer the flight, the more important it is to stretch your legs to improve blood circulation. So, get up regularly from your seat, take a few steps down the aisle, and do some stretches for your legs and back. Besides reducing fatigue and preventing digestive issues, relieving pain from prolonged sitting, getting up and walking regularly improves blood circulation and reduces the risk of blood clots forming, especially in the legs, which could occur following prolonged immobility.

5- Create an environment conducive to rest: if not sleep. Use an eye mask, earplugs against ambient noise, or headphones for relaxing music, adjust your seat (having also chosen what seems to be the best seat for you), and use a travel pillow to support your head and neck, plus a blanket if needed.

Bonus tip: prepare a special long-haul toiletry kit. This is what some people do for the longest flights. A few products to bring along to “revive” the body, if not the spirit, before or upon arrival. Among other things: moisturizer for face and body since the dry cabin air can dehydrate your skin, hand sanitizer or disinfectant (like the ones used during COVID) for better hygiene, lip balm for chapped lips caused by the dry air on planes, or even a nasal spray to moisturize nasal passages.

Sure, it’s not the first time this has happened, but still. It matters because what Americans call a “shutdown” – beyond its implications for the country and its citizens – can also affect tourists visiting or planning to visit the US. And since October 1st, the United States has once again entered a shutdown period.

What exactly is a shutdown?

A shutdown, in its political and economic definition as used in the USA, refers to the immediate closure of government services and the furloughing without pay of all non-essential federal employees – tens of thousands of people critical to the functioning of the state. This results in the suspension or slowdown of numerous public services across the country until things return to normal.

Typically, this situation occurs when Congress fails to pass a budget or funding bill before a predetermined deadline. That’s what’s happening right now with the 2026 budget, which is stuck in political gridlock – though with far more serious consequences than similar budget disputes might have in, say, France or elsewhere in Europe.

What does this mean for tourists?

In practical terms, a shutdown first impacts air travel, with airports operating at reduced capacity due to fewer air traffic controllers, leading to cascading delays and flight cancellations across airline schedules.

But it’s at the national parks and reserves level where things get most complicated for visitors. All of them will see their staff placed on forced leave, with many sites facing outright closure. When you consider that the National Parks Conservation Association oversees several hundred sites, you can imagine the scope and consequences – especially since must-see destinations like the Grand Canyon and other remarkable parks across the American West are directly affected.

The same goes for national museums, particularly those managed by the Smithsonian Institution, which oversees American museums and has a major presence in Washington, DC. Here too, visitors may find doors locked. And soon, possibly even the Statue of Liberty could become collateral damage of the political divisions currently gripping America. Stay tuned…

Not so long ago, we discussed what increasingly looked like Airbus’s dominance over its rival Boeing. The European aircraft manufacturer saw orders skyrocketing – for instance at the last Paris Air Show – while the American giant struggled with multiple setbacks, including the troubled 737 Max.

But that was before. Before the blackmail that America and its increasingly mob-like president are now trying to impose on the entire world…

Not necessarily a winning bet…

The Tariff Weapon

As we know, the United States has implemented its infamous tariff surcharges on virtually everything entering American soil from abroad. The stated goal? To address the trade deficit the US maintains with some of its partners – much to the dismay of those countries and especially their economies and businesses, which now face significant challenges from this shift.

In short, a complete upheaval of trade balances, and for the Trump administration, an opportunity to exercise blackmail: using these punitive tariffs as bargaining chips to extract commercial concessions in sectors where America appears to be struggling. Like aerospace, where Boeing could benefit from the windfall to boost sales that desperately need it.

Orders Are Flooding In

This seems to be playing out in recent orders the company has received. Between the massive $100 billion sale to Qatar a few months ago – complete with a new presidential plane as a gift (why hold back…) – to Japan and its airlines multiplying their Boeing wide-body purchases, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and even Europeans like Poland or Germany with Lufthansa, which just ordered about a hundred Boeings worth several billion dollars that will transit through Switzerland via their subsidiary Swiss (conveniently reducing the US-Swiss trade deficit in the process) – the manufacturer’s order books are filling up at breakneck speed.

All this simply to please Washington and hope that Trump might someday be more lenient economically. Doormat politics, essentially – hardly glorious, especially for European countries that will later complain that Europe struggles to unite or that technically competitive products like the Airbus range aren’t selling as expected. Not surprising when you have a shopkeeper’s vision…

But Can They Deliver?

Fair enough – let Boeing orders pour in, with over 6,000 aircraft currently awaiting delivery (roughly matching Airbus), which should eventually roll out of assembly plants across the Atlantic. Except that while you can influence a product’s commercial success through blackmail or threats, those same tactics won’t necessarily work – or be sufficient – when it comes to actually manufacturing the product.

The customer risks waiting a long time for their order, or receiving something perhaps not as “high-performing” as they’d hoped. A reminder to some that cowardice doesn’t always pay as much as you’d think…

Since their recent revival, night trains have been making a comeback across France and Europe. However, while the initiative seems admirable, it’s not necessarily proving successful.
Since their recent revival, night trains have been making a comeback across France and Europe. However, while the initiative seems admirable, it’s not necessarily proving successful. At least not on certain routes like Paris-Berlin and Paris-Vienna where these two services, launched just recently, may not make it through the year.

A Return to Grace

Let’s look back at the history. After experiencing strong development and reaching their peak between the 1930s and 1970s, night train services gradually declined in France and Europe, facing competition from high-speed trains, cars, and especially budget airlines for longer journeys. But in recent years, both in France and other countries, they’ve been making a comeback—driven by nostalgia, cost savings, and the desire to reduce travel carbon emissions, which are the primary motivations for most passengers choosing them. A positive development, except that…

But Profitability Remains Elusive

Except that… even though these trains have more or less found their audience, the fact remains that many are still far from breaking even. So much so that many continue operating only thanks to subsidies from the EU, national governments, or local authorities. And when this funding is threatened with elimination, problems and uncertainty resurface.

This could very well happen to the two night trains connecting Paris-Berlin and Paris-Vienna, relaunched after COVID almost as symbols of European rail renewal. However, due to lack of profitability—mainly from too few scheduled runs—and the resulting announced withdrawal of public subsidies (primarily on the French side), these routes could shut down as soon as this December. Even though their occupancy rates are quite respectable at around 70%, and more than 65,000 people traveled on them in 2024. A shame, even if the final decision hasn’t officially been announced yet.

Here’s a look at a travel trend you might have heard of but aren’t quite sure what it’s all about: “suitcase gambling”. It’s another one of those expressions, like “extreme day trips”, “dupe destinations”, and “Spring break”, that has made its way over from the English-speaking world. So, what exactly is it?

A Gamble for Better or Worse

We all remember lucky bags, don’t we? For some, it might even bring back fond memories of those large paper cones filled with toys and sweets that kids used to get from bakeries and local shops. You never knew what you were going to get, and that was all part of the fun. Those days may be gone, but the principle lives on, even if it’s not just for children anymore and has been adapted to modern consumer habits.

You’ve likely heard about lost or unclaimed Royal Mail parcels being sold off at auction, either individually or in bulk, with the contents remaining a complete mystery to the buyer. It’s the same idea behind the “mystery trolleys” some supermarkets are now offering, filled with discounted but unknown products. These trends are becoming increasingly popular, not just in the UK but elsewhere too. For the seller, it’s a clever way to shift unsold stock or items they don’t know what to do with. For the buyer, it’s the thrill of the unknown and the hope of snagging a real bargain. It could go either way, really.

But why not, especially if it gives these items a new lease of life?

This very concept is now being seriously considered for all the lost or misplaced luggage that’s never claimed at train stations and airports. We’re talking about thousands upon thousands of bags every year in the UK alone.

Coined by the Americans and Brits who first came up with it, “suitcase gambling” has already taken social media by storm. Influencers are buying up lost luggage and unboxing their finds live for their followers’ enjoyment. In reality, though, auction houses across the pond have been capitalising on this for years.

So, following in the footsteps of specialised companies and fame-seeking influencers, the general public is now getting in on the “suitcase gambling” action, taking part online through dedicated websites. And, of course, everyone is hoping that one day they’ll hit the jackpot.

Nearly Double the Price!

This is part of the budgetary reforms passed by the Trump Administration to boost revenue. The cost of the ESTA, or Electronic System for Travel Authorization, will jump from the current $21 to $40 on September 30 – a nearly 100% increase.

This change could further impact tourism numbers, which have already declined since the new President took office. It’s certainly another source of concern for the American tourism industry in the coming months.

Are you affected by the ESTA? Just a reminder: this applies to nationals from visa-exempt countries for tourist visits of less than three months to the United States – a total of 42 countries including all EU citizens and Swiss nationals.

Note that those who already have a valid ESTA don’t need to apply again, and smart travelers who submit their application before September 30 will only pay $21 instead of $40 – a substantial saving for a family planning to visit the USA.

This travel authorization is easy to obtain, either through the dedicated official website or the associated app. Stick to the official channels whenever possible to avoid the numerous scams associated with obtaining an ESTA.

We’ve mentioned it several times before: the cruise industry is thriving, with more ships sailing the world’s oceans than ever and a passenger base that continues to grow. The 40 million cruise passenger milestone could be reached this year, or at least by 2026—a record! This is thanks in part to the revolution and innovations that began after the end of COVID.

A Continuous “Renewal”

Like every other tourism sector, the cruise industry also had its concerns about the future coming out of the pandemic. Perhaps even more so than others, given that a cruise means spending time in a relatively enclosed space with many other people…

But ultimately, things turned out well—very well, in fact. First, there’s this renewal the industry has embarked upon, now offering new formats, new approaches, and cruises that adapt to changing times and the new audiences interested in them. Younger, with an average age now under 50, more family-oriented, more diverse in terms of socioeconomic backgrounds, financial means, and expectations—this is the audience that has logically driven these changes in its own way.

To this, we must naturally add the technologies of our 21st century, which have also played their part. From prevention measures, particularly health-related ones, through high-performance equipment and new services, to more contactless features, smart connected bracelets for passengers, various apps, and increased use of augmented and virtual reality to assist cruise passengers—everything has been planned or reimagined. And not just onboard, as port terminals are also beginning their transformation to usher us into this new world of cruising.

The World’s Most Advanced Cruise Terminal

To see this in action, look no further than the MSC Cruises terminal inaugurated this year at PortMiami, Florida. This is the world’s largest and most innovative terminal, with over 485,000 square feet spread across four levels, capable of accommodating up to 36,000 passengers per day and three cruise ships simultaneously. Impressive, to say the least.

Naturally, everything has been designed around what’s called “the customer experience,” down to the smallest details, for passenger enjoyment and procedural efficiency. You can already check in and receive your boarding pass remotely before your cruise, via the internet or a dedicated app. Similarly, to save time, you can also prepare the biometric recognition necessary for boarding procedures in advance. For luggage, you can obviously check it in online, then scan your boarding pass to drop it off at one of 42 drop-off points where it will be handled—even from the terminal’s parking lot. And of course, the security and control phases are also simplified in this new terminal. Just scan your passport and look at the camera at one of the terminal’s 18 facial recognition kiosks to validate your identity, then proceed to one of the 22 security screening lanes offered for a quick and smooth procedure to board.

Welcome to Tomorrow’s Cruise Experience

In short, an ultra-modern terminal that contributes to what tomorrow’s cruise industry will be, including its infrastructure. Which, admittedly, bears a strong resemblance to what we already find in several major airports around the world that are, for their part, prefiguring what air travel will be tomorrow. Welcome, then, to the new world…
