When most people think of the Caribbean, their minds immediately go to Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, or perhaps the well-trodden beaches of popular resort destinations. But there’s an archipelago in this part of the world that’s quietly becoming one of the region’s hottest tourist spots—and chances are, you haven’t given it much thought. That destination? Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Where Exactly is Saint Vincent and the Grenadines?

Nestled between Saint Lucia to the north and Grenada to the south, Saint Vincent sits in the Lesser Antilles chain of islands. This island nation of barely 100,000 inhabitants consists of a main island—Saint Vincent—and two-thirds of the Grenadines archipelago (the remainder belongs to Grenada), including smaller islands like Bequia, Mustique, and Canouan, which remain the best known among travelers.

Leading Caribbean Tourism Growth in Early 2025

Traditionally, Saint Vincent has been a destination favored by beach lovers, sailing enthusiasts, and those seeking a more upscale Caribbean getaway. The visitor base has historically been heavily—if not exclusively—focused on North American travelers. Cruise passengers also make brief stops to explore the capital, Kingstown, though the island hasn’t embraced the mega-ship cruise model that dominates other Caribbean ports.

While European visitors remain relatively scarce, the destination has been designated by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) as the one experiencing the strongest growth in visitor arrivals for the first half of 2025. Numbers jumped nearly 20% year-over-year, and the momentum shows no signs of slowing. Beyond its North American audience, the archipelago continues to invest heavily in tourism infrastructure to better showcase its natural, cultural, and historical assets—and is even beginning to court the European market. This is definitely one to watch.

Both French Caribbean islands show similar tourism figures, but Guadeloupe maintains roughly a 20% lead over neighboring Martinique. Structural and situational differences favor the Butterfly Island. From social tensions to living costs and geography, several factors explain these differing perceptions.

Recent statistics reveal a narrowing gap. In 2024, Martinique attracted about one million visitors, while Guadeloupe welcomed 1.2 million. Both destinations fluctuate year to year, with close performance levels. Martinique’s 2024-2025 high season brought nearly 989,000 travelers between December and April—slightly down from 2023 but better than initial fears following autumn’s social unrest.

Guadeloupe is progressing despite 2024’s difficulties, with hotel occupancy at 68% during peak season. Overnight stays stabilize around 1.3 million for each island. Yet this parity masks different dynamics. Martinique had grown 7% in 2024 compared to 2023, while Guadeloupe declined slightly by 3%. In the second quarter of 2025, the trend reversed with a marked decline in Martinique and hotel attendance dropping 12.5% in Guadeloupe.

Geography Changes Everything

Guadeloupe holds a major geographic advantage: its archipelago configuration. Six inhabited islands make up the territory, from Basse-Terre to Grande-Terre, including Marie-Galante, La Désirade, and Les Saintes. This diversity allows visitors to multiply experiences during a single stay. Grande-Terre captivates with its shallow lagoons and white sand, while Basse-Terre offers lush forests and La Soufrière volcano.

Martinique, more compact, provides a more uniform experience despite its varied landscapes. This difference translates into both destinations’ commercial pitch. The Guadeloupe archipelago plays the “multiple journey” card, allowing tourists to explore distinct worlds without leaving French territory. A marketing advantage that particularly appeals to travelers seeking longer stays.

Cost of Living, Social Crises, and Sargassum

Displayed costs vary noticeably between the two islands. Martinique shows food prices 40% higher than mainland France, and remains generally more expensive than Guadeloupe. This difference affects dining, accommodation, and basic goods. Families and budget-conscious travelers therefore favor the Guadeloupe archipelago.

This situation stems from structural factors inherited from the colonial system: dependence on imports representing 80% of consumed food, historical commercial monopolies, and old taxes like the octroi de mer (dock duty). The social movement against high living costs that shook Martinique in 2024 reveals the extent of this problem. These demonstrations, which began in September and worsened in October with urban violence, left deep marks.

Autumn 2024’s tensions marked a turning point for Martinique tourism. Road blockades and temporary closure of Aimé-Césaire Airport thrust the island into international headlines. Violence images, widely shared on social media, eroded potential travelers’ confidence.

The impact measured in bookings: in December 2024, Martinique recorded a 37.7% drop in travel sales compared to December 2023—the steepest decline among all overseas territories. Guadeloupe also experienced a decline, though less pronounced. These figures testify to a confidence crisis that industry professionals have been trying to repair since. Martinique’s economy continues suffering from these events in the second quarter of 2025, with contracting activity.

Sargassum seaweed poses a common challenge to both territories since 2011

Sargassum seaweed poses a common challenge to both territories since 2011. These brown masses invade beaches between April and September, releasing a foul odor as they decompose and creating health risks. Communities invest heavily in daily coastal cleanup, a costly process straining local budgets.

The situation varies by year and ocean currents. In 2025, strandings began earlier than expected, starting in March, with record volumes. Each island’s Atlantic coast bears the brunt of arrivals, while Caribbean-facing areas generally remain spared. Tourism professionals must cope with this unpredictable reality, which can transform a paradise beach into an unusable zone from one week to the next.

Tourism Infrastructure

Grande Anse Beach – Guadeloupe

Hotel infrastructure develops differently on both islands. Guadeloupe currently focuses on moving upmarket, with four-star hotel and resort projects targeting business clientele. This strategy aims to attract affluent international guests, less sensitive to rising airfare costs.

Both islands benefit from frequent air connections, with flights every two to three hours between them, operated by Air Caraïbes, Air Antilles, and Air France.

Both destinations share similar challenges: high transportation costs from Europe, the need to diversify clientele beyond mainland French tourists, sargassum management, and sustainable tourism development.

The future of both islands will depend on their ability to solve these structural problems while showcasing their respective strengths. Martinique, nicknamed the Island of Flowers with over 1,700 floral species, possesses a strong Creole identity. Guadeloupe positions itself as a global biodiversity hotspot. Professionals are banking on green tourism, cultural events, and strengthened communication to maintain these destinations’ appeal against increasingly aggressive Caribbean competition.

Despite their respective challenges, these two Caribbean islands remain exceptional destinations! Their magnificent beaches, rich culture, and preserved nature make them prime tropical getaways. Whether you choose Guadeloupe’s diversity or Martinique’s authenticity, you’ll find warm hospitality and breathtaking landscapes.

Climate change and its devastating effects are now impacting every corner of the globe, prompting more countries, regions, and cities to implement new taxes or increase existing ones. These funds are earmarked for combating climate phenomena and developing protection or rehabilitation programs. Starting next year, your dream Hawaiian getaway is about to cost significantly more.

$100 Million Annual Target Through Tourism Fees

Future visitors to Hawaii could soon face accommodation taxes of up to 14% during their stay in the archipelago. Currently taxed at 10.25%, with an additional 3% in certain counties of the 50th state, short-term accommodations including hotels, tourist residences, and vacation rentals are set to see another 0.75% increase.

Local authorities have greenlit this decision, targeting the approximately 10 million annual visitors who contribute a quarter of the archipelago’s budget. This means the accommodation tax could reach as high as 14% in some areas.

The primary goal is to fund crucial efforts in the fight against climate change, including the maintenance and protection of natural sites. This is particularly critical given the increased wildfire risks due to the climate crisis, as Hawaii experienced in 2023 with devastating fires that claimed around 100 lives and caused billions of dollars in damage.

Once fully implemented, this “climate fee” as officials are calling it, could generate approximately $100 million annually for the state budget. While not an astronomical amount, it represents a groundbreaking move for a state within an increasingly climate-skeptical nation – to put it mildly.

Peru’s Nazca Desert draws 300,000 visitors annually to witness monumental geoglyphs that remain invisible from ground level. This peculiarity transforms an arid plateau in southern Peru into a playground for Cessnas and wild theories. The figures span 174 square miles between the towns of Nazca and Palpa, 250 miles south of Lima.

UNESCO classified the site in 1994, but protection remains challenging against urban development and occasional looters. The Nazca people carved these lines between 500 BC and 500 AD, never able to admire their work in its entirety. An irony that still fuels debate.

Flight Tours: The Only Way to Grasp the Site’s Scale

Local airlines have turned overflights into an industry. About ten operators offer 30 to 90-minute tours from María Reiche airfield, 2.5 miles from Nazca. Cessna 207s remain the most common aircraft, with high wings that facilitate observation. Pilots bank the plane 30 degrees on each side so all passengers can see the figures. This aerial gymnastics causes nausea in roughly a third of passengers.

Flights depart throughout the day, but low morning light (before 10am) enhances contrasts. In the afternoon, thermal turbulence shakes small aircraft more severely. Prices vary by season and flight duration. Some operators also offer departures from Pisco or Ica to avoid the seven-hour drive from Lima. The standard circuit flies over about a dozen main figures.

Accidents remain rare but significant. In 2022, seven tourists died in a Cessna crash. Peruvian authorities have since tightened controls, but some companies continue flying worn-out aircraft. Checking recent reviews and avoiding operators with suspiciously low prices remains wise.

The Geoglyphs: Inventory and Ground-Level Access

The site contains approximately 300 geometric figures, 70 animal and plant drawings, and thousands of straight lines. The hummingbird measures 315 feet, the spider 154 feet, the monkey 361 feet. The condor stretches 440 feet across. These dimensions explain why Maria Reiche, the German archaeologist who devoted 50 years to their study, used a ladder and later a helicopter.

The 43-foot metal tower built in 1976 along the Pan-American Highway provides partial views of three figures: the tree, the hands, and the lizard cut in half by the road. The experience disappoints after seeing aerial photos in guidebooks. The viewing height is too low and the angle inadequate. Visitors rarely spend more than 10 minutes here.

Drones revealed 168 new geoglyphs between 2019 and 2020. Artificial intelligence now helps archaeologists spot faded tracings. Some figures measure less than 33 feet and depict warriors or llamas. These discoveries challenge the astronomical calendar theory popular in the 1970s.

The lines resist time thanks to the climate. This region receives less than 30 minutes of rain per year. The soil, a mix of dark pebbles and light sand, preserves the trace of the slightest passage. The Nazca simply moved oxidized stones to reveal lighter sand underneath. The technique seems simple, but the results have lasted centuries.

Alternative Theories: From Astronomical Calendar to Alien Landing Strips

The absence of a definitive explanation has fueled speculation for 80 years. Erich von Däniken popularized the extraterrestrial theory in 1968 with his book “Chariots of the Gods.” According to him, the lines served as landing strips for spacecraft. The hypothesis conveniently ignores that the sandy soil couldn’t support any heavy craft and that aliens capable of interstellar travel wouldn’t need such basic visual markers.

Maria Reiche defended the giant astronomical calendar theory. Some lines do point toward stellar positions, but archaeologists have demonstrated that with thousands of lines oriented in all directions, the alignments remain statistically normal. The theory persists in tourist brochures nonetheless.

Anthropologists today favor ritual explanations. The lines supposedly served as ceremonial paths linked to water worship in this desert region. Pottery shards found along the tracings suggest processions. The animal figures would represent deities or local constellations.

Local guides adapt their explanations to their audience: scientific for academics, mysterious for New Age groups. Souvenir shops sell as many serious books as conspiracy theories. This ambiguity is part of the local business. The pilots themselves feed the folklore by pointing out “the astronaut” – an anthropomorphic figure that archaeologists identify as a fisherman with his net.

Nazca Town and Other Regional Sites

Nazca has 25,000 inhabitants accustomed to tourist traffic. The town centers around an unremarkable Plaza de Armas. Hotels cluster near the airfield and along the main avenue. Options range from basic hostels to lodges with pools. Air conditioning becomes necessary between December and March when temperatures exceed 95°F (35°C).

Restaurants mainly serve grilled chicken and standard Peruvian dishes. A few places attempt international cuisine with mixed results. Local pisco sour costs a third of Lima prices and helps digest the guides’ extraterrestrial theories.

The María Reiche Museum presents the German scientist’s research. The explanations remain technical but help understand construction methods. The adjacent planetarium screens a dated but informative documentary on the astronomical hypothesis. Combined admission remains affordable.

The Cantalloc aqueducts showcase Nazca hydraulic ingenuity. This underground canal system still functions after 1,500 years. Stone spirals allowed access for maintenance. The visit takes an hour and nicely complements the agricultural dimension of this civilization.

Chauchilla Cemetery displays mummies in their original positions. Looted tombs were reconstructed in the 1990s. Bodies retain their hair and tissues thanks to the dry climate. The macabre atmosphere appeals to fans of authentic sites. The 19-mile journey crosses monotonous desert.

The Palpa geoglyphs, 31 miles north, attract fewer crowds. Some figures date from the Paracas culture, which preceded the Nazca. The site includes complex human representations visible from surrounding hills. The absence of tourist infrastructure preserves the mysterious atmosphere.

Two days suffice to see the essentials if the overflight is booked. Three days allow adding peripheral sites without rushing. Rushed travelers settle for one day with a morning flight and evening bus. This option is exhausting but remains popular with backpackers. Organized tours from Lima include everything but limit freedom. The Nazca Desert deserves better than a quick stopover between selfies.

…assuming, of course, you have the financial means. Long established and widely practiced, the “golden passport” system allows people to relocate abroad relatively easily, bypassing many of the usual hurdles that others face when making such a move. Here’s what you need to know…

What exactly is a “Golden Passport”?

A “golden passport” refers to a special program that allows you to reside in—and even relatively easily obtain citizenship of—a country through investment alone. Often you can retain your original nationality too, if you wish. There’s also a similar option called a “Golden Visa,” which grants long-term residence permits, with the possibility of later obtaining citizenship if desired.

In both cases, it’s essentially a commercial transaction that gives you the opportunity to relocate and enjoy the same benefits as native citizens of your chosen country. This comes in exchange for a substantial financial investment in that country’s economy—whether through real estate purchases, creating or investing in a business, or simply maintaining a well-funded bank account.

And it’s fair to say the system works, particularly for nationals who traditionally face difficulties relocating abroad. While precise figures aren’t available, estimates suggest over one million people currently hold golden passports or visas worldwide. In Europe alone, the number exceeds 100,000, generating several billion dollars in revenue for participating countries.

Contrary to what you might expect, it’s not just tax havens or small nations seeking revenue that open their doors. Within the European Union itself, Malta, Cyprus, Italy, and Greece remain viable destinations, offering Schengen Area access to applicants—though others like Spain and Ireland have recently ended their programs.

Elsewhere, to varying degrees, Golden Passports and Golden Visas are available in numerous countries: the UK, Australia, Canada, Dubai and the UAE, Thailand, Malaysia, and many others. While the target audience is primarily the ultra-wealthy, some countries remain surprisingly “affordable” for a broader range of people. For instance, the investment required to settle in Mauritius is just $50,000 USD (the lowest anywhere), $60,000 in Latvia, $100,000 in Panama, or $150,000 USD in Costa Rica. Certainly not cheap, but not entirely out of reach either…

Sure, it’s not the first time this has happened, but still. It matters because what Americans call a “shutdown” – beyond its implications for the country and its citizens – can also affect tourists visiting or planning to visit the US. And since October 1st, the United States has once again entered a shutdown period.

What exactly is a shutdown?

A shutdown, in its political and economic definition as used in the USA, refers to the immediate closure of government services and the furloughing without pay of all non-essential federal employees – tens of thousands of people critical to the functioning of the state. This results in the suspension or slowdown of numerous public services across the country until things return to normal.

Typically, this situation occurs when Congress fails to pass a budget or funding bill before a predetermined deadline. That’s what’s happening right now with the 2026 budget, which is stuck in political gridlock – though with far more serious consequences than similar budget disputes might have in, say, France or elsewhere in Europe.

What does this mean for tourists?

In practical terms, a shutdown first impacts air travel, with airports operating at reduced capacity due to fewer air traffic controllers, leading to cascading delays and flight cancellations across airline schedules.

But it’s at the national parks and reserves level where things get most complicated for visitors. All of them will see their staff placed on forced leave, with many sites facing outright closure. When you consider that the National Parks Conservation Association oversees several hundred sites, you can imagine the scope and consequences – especially since must-see destinations like the Grand Canyon and other remarkable parks across the American West are directly affected.

The same goes for national museums, particularly those managed by the Smithsonian Institution, which oversees American museums and has a major presence in Washington, DC. Here too, visitors may find doors locked. And soon, possibly even the Statue of Liberty could become collateral damage of the political divisions currently gripping America. Stay tuned…

Not so long ago, we discussed what increasingly looked like Airbus’s dominance over its rival Boeing. The European aircraft manufacturer saw orders skyrocketing – for instance at the last Paris Air Show – while the American giant struggled with multiple setbacks, including the troubled 737 Max.

But that was before. Before the blackmail that America and its increasingly mob-like president are now trying to impose on the entire world…

Not necessarily a winning bet…

The Tariff Weapon

As we know, the United States has implemented its infamous tariff surcharges on virtually everything entering American soil from abroad. The stated goal? To address the trade deficit the US maintains with some of its partners – much to the dismay of those countries and especially their economies and businesses, which now face significant challenges from this shift.

In short, a complete upheaval of trade balances, and for the Trump administration, an opportunity to exercise blackmail: using these punitive tariffs as bargaining chips to extract commercial concessions in sectors where America appears to be struggling. Like aerospace, where Boeing could benefit from the windfall to boost sales that desperately need it.

Orders Are Flooding In

This seems to be playing out in recent orders the company has received. Between the massive $100 billion sale to Qatar a few months ago – complete with a new presidential plane as a gift (why hold back…) – to Japan and its airlines multiplying their Boeing wide-body purchases, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and even Europeans like Poland or Germany with Lufthansa, which just ordered about a hundred Boeings worth several billion dollars that will transit through Switzerland via their subsidiary Swiss (conveniently reducing the US-Swiss trade deficit in the process) – the manufacturer’s order books are filling up at breakneck speed.

All this simply to please Washington and hope that Trump might someday be more lenient economically. Doormat politics, essentially – hardly glorious, especially for European countries that will later complain that Europe struggles to unite or that technically competitive products like the Airbus range aren’t selling as expected. Not surprising when you have a shopkeeper’s vision…

But Can They Deliver?

Fair enough – let Boeing orders pour in, with over 6,000 aircraft currently awaiting delivery (roughly matching Airbus), which should eventually roll out of assembly plants across the Atlantic. Except that while you can influence a product’s commercial success through blackmail or threats, those same tactics won’t necessarily work – or be sufficient – when it comes to actually manufacturing the product.

The customer risks waiting a long time for their order, or receiving something perhaps not as “high-performing” as they’d hoped. A reminder to some that cowardice doesn’t always pay as much as you’d think…

Nearly Double the Price!

This is part of the budgetary reforms passed by the Trump Administration to boost revenue. The cost of the ESTA, or Electronic System for Travel Authorization, will jump from the current $21 to $40 on September 30 – a nearly 100% increase.

This change could further impact tourism numbers, which have already declined since the new President took office. It’s certainly another source of concern for the American tourism industry in the coming months.

Are you affected by the ESTA? Just a reminder: this applies to nationals from visa-exempt countries for tourist visits of less than three months to the United States – a total of 42 countries including all EU citizens and Swiss nationals.

Note that those who already have a valid ESTA don’t need to apply again, and smart travelers who submit their application before September 30 will only pay $21 instead of $40 – a substantial saving for a family planning to visit the USA.

This travel authorization is easy to obtain, either through the dedicated official website or the associated app. Stick to the official channels whenever possible to avoid the numerous scams associated with obtaining an ESTA.

We’ve mentioned it several times before: the cruise industry is thriving, with more ships sailing the world’s oceans than ever and a passenger base that continues to grow. The 40 million cruise passenger milestone could be reached this year, or at least by 2026—a record! This is thanks in part to the revolution and innovations that began after the end of COVID.

A Continuous “Renewal”

Like every other tourism sector, the cruise industry also had its concerns about the future coming out of the pandemic. Perhaps even more so than others, given that a cruise means spending time in a relatively enclosed space with many other people…

But ultimately, things turned out well—very well, in fact. First, there’s this renewal the industry has embarked upon, now offering new formats, new approaches, and cruises that adapt to changing times and the new audiences interested in them. Younger, with an average age now under 50, more family-oriented, more diverse in terms of socioeconomic backgrounds, financial means, and expectations—this is the audience that has logically driven these changes in its own way.

To this, we must naturally add the technologies of our 21st century, which have also played their part. From prevention measures, particularly health-related ones, through high-performance equipment and new services, to more contactless features, smart connected bracelets for passengers, various apps, and increased use of augmented and virtual reality to assist cruise passengers—everything has been planned or reimagined. And not just onboard, as port terminals are also beginning their transformation to usher us into this new world of cruising.

The World’s Most Advanced Cruise Terminal

To see this in action, look no further than the MSC Cruises terminal inaugurated this year at PortMiami, Florida. This is the world’s largest and most innovative terminal, with over 485,000 square feet spread across four levels, capable of accommodating up to 36,000 passengers per day and three cruise ships simultaneously. Impressive, to say the least.

Naturally, everything has been designed around what’s called “the customer experience,” down to the smallest details, for passenger enjoyment and procedural efficiency. You can already check in and receive your boarding pass remotely before your cruise, via the internet or a dedicated app. Similarly, to save time, you can also prepare the biometric recognition necessary for boarding procedures in advance. For luggage, you can obviously check it in online, then scan your boarding pass to drop it off at one of 42 drop-off points where it will be handled—even from the terminal’s parking lot. And of course, the security and control phases are also simplified in this new terminal. Just scan your passport and look at the camera at one of the terminal’s 18 facial recognition kiosks to validate your identity, then proceed to one of the 22 security screening lanes offered for a quick and smooth procedure to board.

Welcome to Tomorrow’s Cruise Experience

In short, an ultra-modern terminal that contributes to what tomorrow’s cruise industry will be, including its infrastructure. Which, admittedly, bears a strong resemblance to what we already find in several major airports around the world that are, for their part, prefiguring what air travel will be tomorrow. Welcome, then, to the new world…

Choosing a travel destination isn’t always straightforward. Between sometimes conflicting opinions from fellow travelers, our current desires and budget constraints, travel documentaries and advertisements we’ve seen, not to mention the positive or negative impressions we might have formed, making a decision can be challenging. That’s why we’re taking you through the main arguments that might convince you to visit a particular place… or not. Today, we’re exploring Costa Rica.

The compelling reasons to go

Minimal entry requirements

Costa Rica has long prioritized tourism, making entry formalities remarkably simple for most visitors, with authorized stay durations significantly extended for many nationalities.

For Americans and Europeans, no visa is required for tourist stays of up to six months. You simply need a passport valid for six months beyond your planned departure date.

An accessible destination

Costa Rica is an easy country to travel through that doesn’t require extensive experience. It offers well-established tourism infrastructure, good facilities, minimal health or safety concerns, and incredible diversity in both destinations and available activities. The country is ideal for those wanting to explore Central or Latin America for the first time, including families with children.

Home to 5% of the world’s biodiversity

Despite its small size (19,700 square miles—roughly the size of West Virginia), Costa Rica hosts more than 5% of the world’s biodiversity. The country features an impressive range of ecosystems, from humid tropical rainforests to dry forests, mangroves, coral reefs, and of course, volcanoes. The same applies to local flora and fauna, with countless varieties of tropical plants, sloths, howler monkeys, magnificent toucans, brightly colored frogs, and many other species.

It’s no wonder this destination has long been a true paradise for nature lovers and ecotourism enthusiasts—Costa Rica actually pioneered the ecotourism movement.

Over a quarter of the country is protected

As a logical extension of this natural wealth, more than a quarter of the country is designated as protected areas, including parks and reserves. These locations play an essential role in biodiversity conservation while offering exceptional ecotourism opportunities.

This protection spans both Caribbean and Pacific coasts with parks like Cahuita, Tortuguero, Manuel Antonio, Corcovado, and others, as well as inland areas. Whether it’s Rincon de la Vieja, Monteverde, Braulio Carrillo, or La Amistad Park (which extends into Panama), you won’t be disappointed. The country’s interior is also where you’ll find the most spectacular volcanoes.

A wide range of nature activities

While Costa Rica boasts dense forests and beautiful volcanoes, it also features stunning beaches perfect for swimming, diving, and especially surfing—the country has earned quite a reputation in this area.

But that’s not all. The destination offers excellent opportunities for trekking and hiking, particularly in its numerous parks and nature reserves. In recent years, horseback riding, bicycle touring, rafting, whitewater adventures, and adventure courses including zip lines, suspension bridges, and canopy tours have all flourished. There’s something for every taste and interest.

“Pura Vida”

“Pura Vida” is an expression you’ll hear frequently in Costa Rica, and it has become the country’s unofficial tourism slogan over time.

But “Pura Vida” (meaning “Pure Life”) is much more than just a phrase here—it represents a life philosophy. It embodies a positive mindset of enjoying existence and appreciating simple moments that invite you to let go and not worry too much about problems, focusing instead on moments of happiness. It also reflects the friendliness, optimism, and gratitude of Costa Ricans, who call themselves “Ticos.”

In everyday language, “Pura Vida” serves multiple purposes—as a greeting for hello or goodbye, “how are you,” or even “thank you.”

… and the reasons that might give you pause

Crowds in certain locations

Costa Rica is among those countries that have heavily invested in tourism economically, particularly ecotourism. This now translates to significant visitor numbers in certain places and during peak periods like Christmas or Easter holidays. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming.

A trend toward “Disneyfication”

This observation—or criticism—comes mainly from those who visited Costa Rica some time ago and have returned recently. There’s a certain disappointment regarding the direction the country has taken in tourism development, where nature seems increasingly “staged” to meet certain visitor expectations, with often excessive monetization of what’s offered today. But this is how times change.

An increasingly expensive country

More tourists often means rising prices and travel costs that become more expensive over time. Costa Rica can be considered costly compared to other Central American countries, though it’s true that the standard of living is higher, tourism is more established and “quality-focused,” with heavy visitor traffic and a predominantly North American clientele.

In short, aside from food and local buses which remain affordable, everything else comes at a price—though the overall budget will still be lower than a trip to Europe or North America.

A road network that could be better

While Costa Rica’s main road network connecting major cities isn’t bad (though often quite congested), secondary roads are a different story. Many are unpaved or poorly paved, requiring careful and slow driving. During the rainy season, some routes can be cut off due to flooding or landslides.

As for driving conditions, like in many countries, traffic rules remain somewhat flexible for some drivers, so it’s better to avoid driving at night outside urban areas.
