What to do in Norway
Nature is the star of this country and the landscapes are just about guaranteed to entrance you.
The capital, Oslo, is encircled by fjords and can easily be explored on foot: The museums, the Akerhus fortress, the castle, the Royal Palace, the Vigeland Park are all great places to visit and you could also go to the Bygdoy peninsula for the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions and that of the Viking Boats. Whatever you decide to do, as soon as you leave the noise of the central it is not difficult to find nature close at hand. The centre of Norway is great for exploring the summits and fjords, and also the town of Bergen not just for its superb position but also for its architecture and cultural dynamism. There are some other towns that are definitely worth visiting in this area; Roros with its wooden houses of grassy roofs that are listed by UNESCO, modern Lillehammer too, but it is the fjords all along the coast that will leave the most lasting impression on you. Tromso in the north is a dynamic town set in a privileged position among the snowy summits; it is the departure point for many polar expeditions. |

Numerous airlines serve various Norwegian airports. Trains, ferries and by road are also possible ways to get to Norway in accordance with your departure country.
No visa is required for French, Swiss or Belgian citizens who stay in the country for less than three months. The currency in circulation is the Norwegian Krone. The budget required is fairly high; budget for around €80 for a hotel room and a main meal alone in a restaurant will set you back around €20. Transport too is fairly expensive. There are no particular health precautions to take in Norway apart from relative to the mosquitoes which can be quite aggressive towards the north in summer. For travelling inland, by air is definitely preferable over long distances such as from the north to south but buses are efficient and comfortable too as well as is the train. The ferries are great for navigating through the fjords. In Oslo trams and the metro are perfect combined with the buses and ferries. |
Towns in Norway
Capital of Norway, Oslo has a little less than 600,000 inhabitants, and almost one million and a half if you consider the metropolitan area. It represents a very wide area and is very close to the surrounding nature, while being fully served by several transportation: international airport, trains, ferries.
Built in a fjord and surrounded by hills, the city is surrounded by numerous islands and lakes. Its climate is humid continental, which tempers the Gulf Stream, with cold winters and frequent snowfall.
You will discover several famous landmarks during your strolls in the city, like City Hall, the Nobel Peace Center, the Akershus fortress, the Palais Royal, Frognerparken, the new Oslo Opera House and Cathedral, but also museums like the Munch-museet devoted to Munch, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum dedicated to the Fram polar expeditions, or the House of Viking boat.
But Oslo is a city where you can practice all kinds of physical activities, and choose between cycling, golf, skiing, horseback riding, fishing, since nature is never far away.
