What to do in Lhasa : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants

LhasaCapital of the autonomous Chinese region of Tibet, Lhasa has about 200 000 inhabitants.

Built at the foot of Mount Gephel, it houses the Potala Palace, former residence of the Dalai Lama and the Norbulingka Palace, which are both listed as World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

Mecca of Buddhism, the city has developed around three monasteries, and the coming of pilgrims, once in constant progression, has largely contributed to its growth.

Today very influenced by the Chinese retaliatory measures, the city is a tourist destination.

The old Tibetan neighborhoods were razed to construct buildings to Chinese standards, but it restored the Potala Palace and built a replica of the old city gate that was destroyed.

You can also visit several mosques for Muslims in Tibet.

Can be accessed via Beijing Lhasa by plane and by train from Beijing.
