Two seasons alternate in Mexico; the dry season between November and May and the wet season from June to October when rainfall is very heavy but generally brief.

Altitude has a great influence on the climate here. A temperate climate is predominant in the areas situated at an altitude of 1,000 to 2,000 metres although it is very cold above 2,000 metres in winter, along the coast and at low altitude temperatures are quite high.

The best time to visit Mexico is between October and April when it is dry and hot but not scorching.

The fascination that Mexico has for visitors is due to several reasons; the exuberant and fun loving people, the Maya and Aztec cultures, the incredible natural beauty, the colonial architecture… This diversity does not fail to seduce its visitors.

Mexico gives a glimpse of the Mexican extravagance; its historical riches rubbing shoulders with the slum districts, the National Palace and the Metropolitan Cathedral, Alameda Park surrounded by streets lined with old colonial houses, the magnificent Constitution Plaza and not forgetting the Pyramid at Cuicuilco and the National Museum of Anthropology amongst many other wonders that await you.

In Oaxaca State, the town with the same name has a particular atmosphere that seduces all who visit; its streets lined with old houses and its Indian population are certainly major attractions together with the beautiful surrounding countryside.

The various Mayan ruins at the Yucatan peninsula are definitely worth a visit together with Chichén Itzá, a magnificent well restored pre-columbian city that is particularly spectacular during the equinoxes for its snake of light and shade that can be seen climbing the steps at El Castillo.

In the south, the Chiapas offer a variety of landscapes to be enjoyed ; the lake area of Montebello, the falls at Agua Azul, the ruins of Palenque, the colonial town of San Cristobel de las Casas and Sumidero Canyon each give you a different perspective on its diverse treasures.

Several airlines offer flights to Mexico from Europe.

A visa is not required for a stay of less than three months.

The currency in circulation is the Mexican Peso.

The required budget is fairly moderate; a room will cost around €30 apart from in the high season when prices rise sharply. A reasonable meal will cost less than €10 excluding the tip of around 10 to 15%. There is a great choice of restaurants for all budgets.

Concerning health precautions, Mexico has managed to surmount the A-H1N1 flu epidemic but you should follow any updates of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website before leaving. Make sure all your regular vaccinations are up to date and add those for hepatitis A and typhoid. Protect yourself from the mosquitoes, they can transmit dengue fever, and watch out for the killer bees. Do not drink tap water.

Airplane is obviously the best choice for inland travel over long distances but comfortable buses are also available. Renting a car may be very practical but it is also quite expensive.
