What to do in Jamaica (Caribbean Islands)
Jamaica is quite poor and populous but it is an idyllic destination because of its climate, gorgeous landscapes and its culture full of African influences but marked by slavery.
Kingston, the capital, isn’t well known just for its troubles, it is also a very lively city with culturally diverse character. The main attractions of this lush, green city are the Bob Marley Museum, the historical centre, the craft market and its bustling streets. To the north-east, Long Bay is a great surf spot that is be very popular with surfing enthusiasts, but it is also a beautiful pink sand beach with warm turquoise waters that invite you to relax. To the northwest, Montego Bay will seduce you with its typical Jamaican atmosphere; the lively port, nightlife, beaches, golf courses, various handicrafts and diverse water sports. Closer to the center is Cockpit Country, a wonderful site you can see by helicopter. Try to visit Negril, not only for the beauty of its beach, but also you can easily meet and get to know the local residents. Two international airports, Kingston and Montego Bay, serve Jamaica from many cities in North America and Europe.
No visa is required for a stay for less than 30 days. The currency in circulation is the Jamaican dollar. Your daily budget in Jamaica should be estimated at between €30 and €70 depending on the level of comfort desired. An average meal will cost about €15, except if you eat local dishes based on fish and tropical fruit and vegetables. A decent room costs about €60, although it normally costs less in some of the smaller hotels or boarding houses. There are no special health issues but it is advisable to take the usual precautions regarding your drinking water. For travelling within the country, renting a scooter or motorcycle is very convenient. Buses are slow and irregular, but very inexpensive and a great way to meet people. Concerning souvenirs for your friends and family, rum and local music are obvious and popular choices! |
Towns in Jamaica (Caribbean Islands)
Capital of Jamaica, Kingston is located in south-east. Bob Marley's homeland, the city is marked by its musical influence and Rastafari, who advocated a return to African roots and respect for nature, especially in its poorest neighborhoods.
The historical center is located near the waterfront: this is what built the Bob Marley Museum. You can also visit the craft market, the National Gallery, Devon House for its colonial architecture of the 19th century, the Kingston Parish Church with its clock tower, but the botanical garden, zoo and Vale Royal, beautiful home 17th century. You will neglect obviously not the beautiful beaches, and you enjoy the music everywhere, in streets, shops, bars and buses, and of course on the stages of many city clubs. You can also leave the city to discover the Blue Mountains to explore on foot or 4x4, and go enjoy a coffee, deemed one of the best in the world, having visited the factory in Mavis Bank coffee.
