What to do in Barbados
Barbados is the most prosperous and most British island of the Caribbean.
A luxury tourist destination, it also offers visitors a diversity of sporting activities as well as many interesting places to visit. Bridgetown, the capital and only big town on the island, manages to combine modernism and history with colonial houses in Broad Street, the historic Carénage quarter, the statue of Nelson, the cathedral and its neo-gothic buildings from the 19th Century. You could visit the Barbados Wildlife Reserve, an animal park with various animals at liberty including monkeys, iguanas, turtles and caimans. The marine Reserve at Folkstone is very popular with divers, with or without a bottle; fish, corals and sea anemones abound in a spectacular display. Various museums may prove of interest if you would like to discover some local history, these include the Barbados Museum and Historical Society, which traces local history, and the Sunbury Plantation House, itself an old colonial house, 300 years old, which follows the daily life of a sugar cane plantation. Various markets around the island provide the perfect place to see and learn about some of the island’s colourful and aromatic fruit, vegetables, spices and fish. Some of the happiest visitors here though are the sports fans: Barbados has just about everything! Aquatic sports of course with everything from surfing to jet skis to diving, but also land sports including polo, cricket and golf. |
Barbados : The basics
To get there, the airplane is the simplest way, either via the West Indies or directly from London.
European residents do not require a visa, just a valid passport. The currency in circulation is the Barbados dollar. Credit cards are accepted and automatic cash distributors are easy to find. The costs of living are quite high, close to European prices. You will have difficulty finding a hotel room for less than €100 and a meal will cost you around €30. The touristic infrastructure is well developed meaning that for the price stated above you will find a good choice. The main health precautions you need to take are protection against mosquitoes and the sun. Traveling around the island is easy, either by bus (the service is both practical and regular) or rent a car but don’t forget that here they drive on the left! If you wish to take home some souvenirs then Rum is one of the most popular gifts although handmade local arts and crafts pieces from Pelican Village are also popular. |
Towns in Barbados

The nightlife will not disappoint fans of shows and nightclubs. And in the day, Brighton Beach, north of the city will welcome fans of relaxation, while the insane dive will be spoiled for choice of their spot.
