Ideal for an adventure, Mauritania, an African in South West Western Sahara is a country to discover this deep desire for sensation. Three quarters of its size are characterized by a typical Saharan desert with a long period of drought. Peneplains and dunes are the dominant landscape with intense heat during the day and cool night supported. Further south, the whole is rather made up of steppe vegetation characteristics of a Sahel region with a premium of rain from time to time. Nouakchott, the capital, is a city along the Atlantic, with a more lenient, since the humidity of the coast that the weather is quite tolerable during the dry period between November and March, a perfect start for a trip to Mauritania . |

What to do ?
There are few countries that less touristy Mauritania: wild, barren, poor, a country that is truly conducive to adventure and discovery of another world, far and wide.
Nouakchott, the capital, surrounded by desert, has busy markets and a beautiful beach, an interesting National Museum, a fishing port lively, and the National carpets where you can see women weaving. Nouadhibou, further north, near the sea port is a fishing waters, ideal for water sports enthusiasts and anglers. The National Park Banc d'Arguin is a paradise of birds gathered on the islands of sand to a halt on the path or migration to spawn: you can visit by boat with guide. Amateur archaeologists will get to Kumbi Saleh, which is in part a huge mosque cleared of sand, until the resumed excavations to uncover what appear to be ruins of a gigantic city. Atar is another attractive place to visit, with its maze of alleys and markets, and especially the starting point for various excursions: Old city of Chinguetti, Ben Amera, Ouadane Museum, among others. |
Mauritania : The basics
The easiest access is by air, flights being operated to Paris to Nouakchott.
A visa valid for three months is required. The currency in circulation is the Ouguiya. The budget plan is rather high. A double room will cost about 30 € and a meal in the restaurant a little less than 10 €. You will also be housed in tents or huts along the road or track and negotiate the price of your meal. About your health, take care to heat thoroughly and drink (no tap water!). Provide a first aid kit well stocked, have your vaccinations up to date more traditional ones against yellow fever, typhoid and hepatitis A and B. Do not drink tap water, peel your fruits and vegetables, wash your hands before handling food and avoid stray animals. To track your movements on the territory, bush-taxis or trucks are slow but one of the few affordable solutions. In town, you will find many taxis but tired. |
