What to do in Pyongyang : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants

PyongyangCapital of North Korea, Pyongyang has two and a half million inhabitants. City very closed, it seems necessarily very strange to a Western visitor, and besides, few tourists venture there. Those that do (and that will inevitably be accompanied by a guide) discover a city marked by the personality cult of the dictator (and its predecessor), whose gigantic portraits are everywhere. Steles and the representative statues, illuminated at night, dotting the city. It is therefore not surprising that the main attractions during the organized tours are also in honor of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong Il: on the hill of Mansuadae, you will discover the Arc de Triomphe in tribute the return of Kim-Il sung after World War II, the Juche Tower, and the Kumsusan Palace, former presidential palace and mausoleum of the latter, and the huge bronze statues of two men. The other steps of a typical visit: the Palace of children, who teaches traditional music of the countries with the most talented kids, and offers the opportunity to attend a show or a rehearsal; August and September is held the festival of Airang celebrating national holidays, and comprising 100 000 artists participating in these choreographies featuring Korea the 20th century in the form of gigantic patterns formed by the dancers; the kimilsungia-Kimjungilia flower show which, as its name suggests, features two species of flowers whose names are a tribute to the two dictators, the first a purple orchid, and the second a red begonia.
