Capital of the State of Massachusetts, Boston is also the economic and cultural centre of New England. Its famous universities, libraries, cultural events and colonial architecture make Massachusetts a unique American city. It has a population of around 700,000, over five million if the entire agglomeration is included. You may have the opportunity to see one of the many festivals and cultural events that take place here such as the festival of baroque Music, one of several relating to the cinema, and there is also Gay Pride, the Puerto Rican festival, and the Haitian festival, which illustrate the cultural diversity present in this city. The museums offer another aspect; there are a number of prestigious collections worth seeing including the famous Museum of Fine Arts, and the Institute of Contemporary Art to name just two of the many present. Boston’s interesting historical heritage is also firmly to the forefront and is well worth discovering; visit the Freedom Trail that offers a circuit of discovery featuring monuments and major historical features such as the Boston Commons public gardens, the church on Park Street, Kings Chapel cemetery, the site of the Boston Massacre and the house of Paul Rever, which is the oldest house in Boston. Metro trains and buses will enable you to get around the city easily but the bicycle is a popular choice for transport too, especially among the students.
